Professor Bourne re-elected UG chancellor

The University of Guyana (UG) administration, in response to questions raised by a few media houses about recent calls by the University of Guyana Workers Union (UGWU) and the University of Guyana Senior Staff Association (UGSSA) for the resignation of Chancellor Professor Compton Bourne, has declared that it does not support the call.
At a recent meeting of the University’s Council, Professor Bourne was re-elected chancellor for a period of three years and the administration looks forward to working with Chancellor Bourne, the council, all university staff and stakeholders, to charter a new course for the institution, a release from the institution said.
Professor Bourne is a graduate of the University of London, the University of Birmingham and the University of the West Indies. He is a former president of the Caribbean Development Bank, a post he took up May 1, 2001. Prior to this appointment, he was principal of the St Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies from 1996 to 2001, pro vice chancellor for Planning and Development from 1990 to 1996 and deputy principal of the St Augustine Campus from 1990 to 1993. He held an appointment as professor of economics from 1981 to 2001, and is now professor emeritus of economics. Professor Bourne served as a director of the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago from 1987 to 2000. He is a fellow of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences, past president of the Caribbean Studies Association, and past vice president of the Caribbean Agro-Economic Society.
